Welcome to Miss Gwynne’s Class
In Miss Gwynne’s class, we aim to create a fun, inspiring and supportive environment where children are encouraged to explore, ask questions and develop a lifelong love of learning. Below you’ll find information about our daily routines and curriculum highlights
Daily Routine
(Full daily schedule to be confirmed)
Our days are filled with exciting learning experiences across a broad and balanced
curriculum. We incorporate reading, writing, maths, and creative learning into every day, with
opportunities for hands-on exploration and reflection.
Spellings
Spelling is an important part of our literacy development. We practise our spellings daily in preparation for our weekly spelling test on Friday.
Reading
Reading is a key focus in our classroom. Each child will have the opportunity to read to an adult every day, and this will often include comprehension questions to check for understanding. In addition, we explore a wide range
Lunches and Water Bottles
Children will select their lunch choices weekly, usually on a Thursday. They can choose from a hot dinner, jacket potato, sandwich, salad, or plain pasta (always available).
We also ask that every child brings a labelled water bottle filled with fresh water (no juice, please) each day. Bottles are accessible throughout the day and are sent home for cleaning at the end of each day.
PE
PE is an important part of our weekly routine, helping children stay active and develop important physical skills.
Children should come to school wearing their PE kits on PE days.
Literacy – Talk for Writing
We use the Talk for Writing approach to develop confident, imaginative writers. This fun and engaging method was created by author Pie Corbett and helps children build writing skills through storytelling, drama and structure.
Talk for Writing follows three main stages:
1. Imitation – Children learn texts through actions, story maps, and repetition.
2. Innovation – Children adapt the story or structure to make it their own.
3. Independent Application – Children create their own original writing.
Benefits for your child:
- Builds confidence through oral storytelling
- Expands vocabulary and language awareness
- Makes writing more engaging and enjoyable
- Develops memory, speaking, and writing skills
Maths
We follow the White Rose Maths scheme, which breaks concepts into small, manageable steps supported by visual aids.
Children are encouraged to challenge themselves and take on the role of the teacher – especially when we ask, “Is Tiny the Turtle correct?”
We also enjoy Times Table Rockstars competitions to boost multiplication fluency in a fun and motivating way.
Science
We aim to inspire curiosity and wonder through practical, hands-on science lessons.
Our first topic is Earth and Space, where we explore the relationship between the Sun and Moon and our planet.
Knowledge of the World
We believe in developing respect and understanding of different beliefs and cultures.
Each half term, we explore a different world belief through art, design, cooking and performance.
Our first topic is Belonging – Hindu teaching about God.
French
Children will learn French through a creative and multi-sensory approach that includes images, songs, art and games, making language learning fun and memorable.
History
We bring the past to life through drama, art and storytelling.
Our first history topic is Stone Age to Iron Age – The story of Britain, where children explore how life has changed over time.
Geography
In Geography, we become explorers!
Our first topic is Landscapes and Describing Maps, where children learn how to interpret and create maps and understand the physical features of our world.
We’re looking forward to an exciting and inspiring year in Miss Gwynne’s class. Thank you for your continued support – together we can help your child thrive!
