Intent
At Larwood School, our French curriculum is delivered through the Language Angels scheme, which provides a carefully planned sequence of lessons aligned with the National Curriculum. It aims to foster curiosity, broaden cultural understanding, and help pupils develop the skills needed to communicate confidently in another language.
The curriculum is structured to allow pupils to build on prior learning gradually. In Lower KS2, the focus is on developing strong speaking and listening skills, while Upper KS2 deepens these skills and introduces more complex reading and writing tasks. Pupils learn to express ideas and interact in French through speech and writing, while also gaining insight into French-speaking cultures.
Our aim is to inspire a love of languages and equip pupils with a strong foundation for future language learning, helping them become confident, reflective, and culturally aware learners.
Implementation
Lessons are sequenced to revisit prior learning and introduce new vocabulary and grammar progressively. Each unit includes opportunities for listening to authentic French through audio recordings by native speakers, ensuring accurate pronunciation and exposure to real language use.
Teachers use structured lesson packs that include clear guidance, vocabulary displays, and interactive resources to support learning. Cultural elements are embedded within lessons to give pupils a broader understanding of French-speaking communities. Key vocabulary and grammar are reinforced through classroom displays and revision activities, helping pupils retain and apply their learning.
Impact
The impact of our French curriculum is seen in pupils’ growing confidence and enthusiasm for language learning.
Progress is monitored through questioning and summative assessments that identify next steps. Our goal is for pupils to leave Larwood with a positive attitude towards languages and the skills to continue learning beyond primary school.
