English – Adventure Story Writing and Newspaper Reports

This term, through Talk for Writing, children will split their learning into two focused half terms: the first half term will be dedicated to adventure story writing, where they will explore key features such as character, setting and action; the second half term will centre on newspaper reports, with children researching report features using the internet and school library books. By the end of the term, they will have created their own imaginative adventure stories as well as clear, engaging newspaper articles.

Maths – White Rose Curriculum

In maths, we will be following the White Rose curriculum. This term, children will focus on place value, addition and subtraction, and begin to build strategies for multiplying and dividing. Alongside this, we will strengthen mental maths skills through number bonds, times tables, and place value practice.

Science

Science in Year 5 is an exciting, hands-on journey! We make sure that our lessons are practical and engaging to inspire a lifelong passion for discovery in the future innovators, entrepreneurs and scientists among us. This term in Year 5, we will begin by focusing on Properties and Changes of Materials, investigating how different materials behave and how they can be changed or separated. Later in the term, we will explore Living Things and Their Habitats, learning how plants and animals adapt to their environments and how ecosystems are organised and sustained.

Knowledge of the World

This term, pupils will learn about celebrations connected to key figures in Judaism and Christianity, exploring why these individuals are important and how their lives are remembered today. Through stories, discussion and creative activities, children will discover the meanings behind festivals and traditions linked to figures such as Moses and Jesus.

French

Modern languages are vital in today’s global world! In French, our class will be learning ‘Getting to know you’ which develops talking about themselves.

Computing

This Spring term, we will dive into the world of technology, focusing on communicating and presenting information using spreadsheets through fun and interactive activities on Purple Mash.

Art

This term, we will be exploring arts and crafts from around the world, discovering different cultures and traditions through hands-on creative activities.

Geography – Using Maps

In Geography this term, we will be learning how to read maps, use compasses, and understand symbols and keys. We will also explore different locations and practice using our map skills through fun, hands-on activities.

Skills Curriculum

In the skills lessons, children will have the opportunity to develop practical and creative abilities, including cooking, arts and crafts, gardening, outdoor learning, health and fitness, and essential life skills for the community.

Music

We have a dedicated music teacher, and our lesson is every Wednesday. This Term our focus is on developing foundational skills in pitch, pulse, and performance using the glockenspiel.

PSHE

In PSHE this term, we will be exploring feelings and emotions, as well as focusing on our behaviour curriculum to understand how our actions affect ourselves and others, and to develop positive social skills.
