Miss Gwynne’s Class

Welcome to Miss Gwynne's Class

In Miss Gwynne’s class, we aim to create a fun, inspiring and supportive environment where children are encouraged to explore, ask questions and develop a lifelong love of learning. Below you’ll find information about our daily routines and curriculum highlights.

Daily Routine

Our days are filled with exciting learning experiences across a broad and balanced curriculum. We incorporate reading, writing, maths and creative learning into each day, with plenty of opportunities for hands-on exploration, discussion and reflection.

Spellings

Spelling is an important part of our English learning. We practise spellings daily to help children build confidence and accuracy in their writing. Our weekly spelling test takes place every Friday.

Reading

Reading is a key focus in our classroom. Each child reads to an adult every day, often followed by short comprehension questions to develop understanding. We also enjoy sharing a wide range of engaging class texts, helping children broaden their vocabulary and develop a strong love of reading.

Key Information

Lunches and Water Bottles

Children select their lunch choices weekly, usually on a Thursday. They can choose from:

  • A hot dinner
  • Jacket potato
  • Sandwich
  • Salad
  • Plain pasta (always available)

Please ensure your child brings a labelled water bottle filled with fresh water each day (no juice, please). Bottles are accessible throughout the day and will be sent home for washing each afternoon.

PE

PE is an important part of our weekly routine, supporting children’s physical development, teamwork and wellbeing.
Children should come to school wearing their PE kits on PE days.

Talk for Writing

We use the Talk for Writing approach, developed by author Pie Corbett, to support confident and imaginative writers. This fun, practical method helps children internalise language structures through storytelling and drama before moving into independent writing.

Talk for Writing has three stages:

  1. Imitation – Learning a model text through actions, repetition and story maps
  2. Innovation – Adapting the text to create a new version
  3. Independent Application – Writing an original piece using learned structures

Benefits for your child include:

  • Greater confidence through oral storytelling
  • Broader vocabulary and language awareness
  • More motivation and enjoyment in writing
  • Improved memory, speaking and writing skills

Subject Areas

Maths

We follow the White Rose Maths scheme, which breaks concepts into small, manageable steps supported by visual representations. Children are encouraged to think deeply, explain their ideas and even take on the role of the teacher—especially when we ask, “Is Tiny the Turtle correct?”

We also take part in Times Table Rockstars competitions to develop multiplication fluency in a fun and engaging way.

Science

Science in our class is hands-on, practical and curiosity-driven.
Our next topic is States of Matter, where we will explore:

  • Solids, liquids and gases
  • How materials change state

Knowledge of the World

We aim to build respect and understanding of different beliefs and cultures. Each half term we learn about a world belief through art, design, cooking and performance.

Our next topic is Events in Jesus’ Life, including Lent and Easter.

History

We bring history to life through role play, art, discussion and storytelling.

Our next topic is The Romans, where children will explore:

  • Why the Romans invaded Britain
  • How the Celts reacted
  • What life was like in Roman Britain
  • The lasting impact of Roman rule

Geography

In Geography, we become explorers!
Our next topic is Europe, where we will:

  • Identify European countries and major cities
  • Explore key human and physical features
  • Compare different European regions
  • Develop map, atlas and globe skills

We are excited for an inspiring, creative and successful year in Miss Gwynne’s class. Thank you for your continued support – together we can help your child thrive.
