Intent
At Larwood School, our PSHE curriculum aims to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills, and values they need to lead healthy, safe, and fulfilling lives. We want children to develop resilience, confidence, and empathy, enabling them to form positive relationships and make informed decisions.
Using the Jigsaw PSHE programme, we provide a structured and progressive approach that covers all aspects of personal, social, health, and economic education, including statutory Relationships Education, Health Education, and age-appropriate Sex Education. Our intent is to nurture the whole child—supporting their spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development—while preparing them for life in modern Britain and a diverse world.
Implementation
PSHE is taught weekly through the Jigsaw scheme, which combines mindfulness, emotional literacy, and social skills development. Lessons are delivered in six thematic units across the year:

Changing Me
Each unit builds on prior learning and includes opportunities for discussion, reflection, and practical activities. Jigsaw’s approach integrates mindfulness techniques to help pupils manage emotions and develop focus and self-awareness.
Assemblies, themed days, and cross-curricular links reinforce PSHE learning, and sensitive topics are taught in a safe, supportive environment. Teachers adapt lessons to meet the needs of all pupils ensuring inclusivity and accessibility.
Impact
The impact of our PSHE curriculum is evident in pupils’ ability to articulate their feelings, show respect for others, and demonstrate positive attitudes towards diversity and equality. Pupils develop strategies for managing challenges, maintaining healthy relationships, and making safe choices.
