Achieve Believe Expect Enjoy

Well-being and Learning

At Larwood School, we believe a child’s well-being is just as important as their learning. Building positive relationships with students and their families is essential if the student is to achieve the best outcomes at school. Our routines are designed to support pupil well-being, by ensuring an inclusive approach and fostering a positive and thriving school environment that is consistent, with targets that are realistic, measurable and achievable. We have recognisable systems in place to support students to achieve in every element of their school experience.

Growing up isn’t always easy, and it’s perfectly normal for children to need a bit of extra support now and then. Whether your child feels worried, there are changes at home, or they just need someone to talk to – we’re here for them.

Our school culture sees success celebrated and positive contribution recognised, developing a sense of pride and reflection. Our students can identify personal progress and challenge behaviours that don’t meet our expectations. In practice, we are a school that is proactively anti-bullying, promotes inclusion, and encourages curiosity regarding special interests, hobbies and strengths. To ensure we reflect the students’ current interests in our decision making, student voice contributes to our planning in this area.

Through our PSHE provision, we have allocated time to discuss mental health and well-being, openly discussing topics that might impact on ourselves, each other and the world around us. Health and hygiene, sleep, relationships and friendships are just some of the topics covered. One of the greatest challenges facing our young people today is navigating the digital world, as many of our students learn to balance their desire to engage with online activity whilst making safe and responsible choices. We share a weekly online safety update with our school community via the Parent & Carer Newsletter.

Our Class Teams support all our students as individuals, tailoring their delivery to accommodate the needs of their class. This allows them to be responsive to even the smallest of changes and take appropriate action if there is a concern. From something as simple as needing a piece of toast due to a skipped breakfast, a friendship worry or those who just feeling down, our staff are ready to respond.

Sadly, we understand there are times when additional help is required to support those experiencing life changes, significant mental health and well-being concerns or vulnerability that goes above and beyond what many schools can offer within their in-house resources. We work with multiple agencies to ensure that the needs of the students, and the families we support, are met. This may include signposting to additional external services or medical support. More information on this can be found via our Family Support Workers.
